To succeed as a leader in today’s dynamic world, it’s necessary to stretch beyond your comfort zone to build coalitions, alliances and relationships that are mutually beneficial. Learn how to increase value and respect for your agency, your staff and yourself by positioning yourself as a knowledgeable community leader online and off. In this Make and Take Workshop you will learn create a strategy to turn your wisdom, insight and knowledge into relationship gold.

Are you a respected member of your community?   Are you known for your wisdom, leadership skills, insight and knowledge about critical community issues.   To successfully advocate for your agency you must learn to connect to current hot topics and key policy areas such as childhood obesity, bullying, health and wellness, fitness, economic development, environmental stewardship, youth development, emergency preparedness or other vital causes.

1.25 hours to 3 hours

 

Learning Outcomes

 

 

Participants will be able to:

  • Define key areas of expertise,
  • List trending topics and policy area such as childhood obesity, bullying, health and wellness, fitness, economic development, environmental stewardship, youth development, emergency preparedness or other vital causes
  • Write an easy-to-understand “brand identity statement” by defining their agency’s purpose and benefits.
  • Articulate their agency’s purpose, benefits and value
  • Discover methods to locate critical community groups and secure invitations to participate.
  • List specific ways both staff and volunteers can help promote the “park and recreation brand through their circles of influence.

Need Assessment

 

As so many long-time park and recreation leaders retire, they take with them (among other things) personal relationships, community contacts and years of experience. And, because park and recreation agencies are sometimes looked at as “fun and games,” they are often left out of serious community conversations. In addition, when park and recreation professionals are not visibly represented during formal and informal discussions, they may be looked at as non-essential, dispensable or replaceable. Benefits and solutions “branding” improves everything from morale and attitude to funding and resource development.

 

For administrators this session is a professional investment. Budget cuts translate to staff cuts. Don't leave your career to chance. Position yourself as a community leader in order to increase your value as a paid or unpaid staff member or citizen advocate.

Session Format

Lecture, small group discussion, audience participation

 

Learner Assessment

Through small groups activities participants will list places to find community contacts and groups. Written exercises will enable participants to commit a benefits-based brand identity to paper. Participants will assess their current circle of influence through a brief quiz. They will also design a short action plan to help them implement ideas upon their return to their community.

Speaker Bio
